Domestic Violence and the Recession: A Troubling Combination for the Black Community | The Defenders

Does the economic downturn mean an increase in domestic violence? The recession and its aftermath has been blamed for a rise in domestic violence. One in every four women in this country could be a victim, and it may be getting worse.

I, Debra Nixon-Bowles, am the Founder of a Women Called Moses Coalition & Outreach – www.womencalledmoses.org. This past weekend, our agency was featured in the Dallas/Houston news media market highlighting the critical need for increased funding and additional facilities in our region for domestic violence victims.

Women Called Moses is in extraordinary need of assistance to help domestic violence victims and their children. We often serve a historically underrepresented, and underreported population of minority domestic violence victims (African-Americans/Hispanics). While federal grants and donations are given to large domestic violence agencies in the area, WCM is oftentimes dealt the role of being the more hands-on agency handling the overflow when the larger agencies are at capacity and stop picking up the telephone. However, we do not even come close to having the resources to assist our clients in the multiple ways they need to be helped.

We need you to join us! With your help, we can really save lives! Please call: (214) 497-2422 or make a tax-deductible, charitable donation at: www.womencalledmoses.org

Sincerely,

Debra Nixon Bowles
